This is a story about identity — an identity passed from mother to child.
We began our journey with the dream of finding stories of women, mothers who live along the border and raise their children within several cultures at once. They sing children’s songs and rhymes in their native language, even when no one around them understands. They share stories from their youth — how they met, how they sang, how they built their lives.

We recorded 25 interviews with Ukrainians and Romanians on both sides of the border. These are stories of families, of love, of how they raised their children, and what they hope to pass on to future generations.

But we found more than we had dreamed of.

We heard the voices of ordinary people who told us what it means to feel like a stranger even in your own homeland.
